On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. the Orlando VA Healthcare System will host a Mental Health Summit in the 4th floor, main auditorium of the Orlando VA Medical Center located at 13800 Veterans Way, Lake Nona, Orlando, Florida 32827.

The event will be accessible both in person at the Orlando VA Medical Center and virtually via Microsoft Teams HERE. Anyone interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by clicking HERE. This important event aims to foster dialogue, collaboration, and innovation in mental health care for Veterans and their families. The summit will feature a series of expert-led panel discussions focused on key topics related to mental health recovery and support:

  • Panel Discussion 1: Recovery and Suicide Prevention – 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
This panel will explore strategies for suicide prevention, highlight recovery journeys, and discuss available resources to support Veterans at risk.
  • Panel Discussion 2: Recovery and Substance Abuse – 10:45 AM – 11:45 AM
This session will focus on the intersection of mental health and substance abuse, providing insights into treatment options and recovery pathways.
  • Panel Discussion 3: Recovery, Outpatient Care, and Evidence-Based Practices –  1:30 PM – 2:30 PM. The final panel will examine the latest evidence-based practices in outpatient care, emphasizing recovery-oriented approaches for Veterans.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in these discussions to gain valuable insights, share experiences, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of mental health services for Veterans. “We are committed to providing comprehensive mental health care that addresses the unique needs of Veterans,” said Dr. Diana Mendez, Mental Health Program Manager. “This summit is a critical opportunity for us to come together, share knowledge, and strengthen our community’s response to mental health challenges.”

For more information about the summit or any questions, please email: diana.mendez2@va.gov.

If you’re going to the Post, please consider bringing a box/package of Oatmeal to donate to the Leesburg Food Pantry. The Auxiliary Community Service Chairwoman Mary Ann Jarboe is assisting the pantry by collecting needed items each month. The pantry includes Mac & Cheese in every food basket it gives out to needy families, and they’re supply is low. So for July, we’re collecting any brand, any type – boxed, microwavable – it doesn’t matter. They need a variety.

Thank you in advance!

The City of Leesburg will be holding a Veterans Day Parade on 9 November. Our Post would like to participate in the parade, with a float and a few persons leading and carrying our Flags. We are hoping to involve the Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of AMVETS with us. If you would like to assist in building the float or in the parade, feel free to contact one of the officers. Here is a link to the information https://www.facebook.com/events/1009813800870041

We are still looking for volunteers to participate in our Honor Guard. Our Post is almost 400 members strong, plus Sons of AMVETS and Ladies Auxiliary. We need at least five people to step up. It will be good to be able to provide the honors earned to our deceased brothers and sisters, as well as participate in local events. Please consider signing up on one of the lists posted. You can also send an email to webmaster@amvets2006.org

The Post needs volunteers for activities and assistance in operating the post.  If people do not step up, you will see activities decrease.  If you want to volunteer, please contact any officer or trustee with your interest.  Please ensure anytime you volunteer, you submit your time to 2nd VP ________________________.  If you would like to volunteer, click HERE.
